Classes Offered
Classes are available for a wide range of ages. Students as young as 8 years old up to elderly adults can take classes, and NO PREVIOUS MUSICAL EXPERIENCE OR BACKGROUND IS REQUIRED.
Initial classes being offered will be classes in sitar (ranging from beginner, intermediate, and advanced skill levels), vocal classes, and tabla. If students desire instruction with instruments such as harmonium, violin, guitar, and others, the Mishras will teach ragas utilizing these instruments as well. Vocal classes will be especially emphasized as the foundation of the music.
As more students apply, then more classes covering such things as Kathak dancing, Tala, Hindi, bansuri (bamboo flute), and even Indian cooking will be added eventually, but not this year.
View the information below for a short biographical sketch of the teachers who will be teaching at the Mishra School of Indian Classical Music in Nelson, BC.

Selkirk College Classes
We are very pleased to announce that classes this year will be at the 10th street campus of SELKIRK COLLEGE. Classes start on May 10th, 2010 and run through June 4th, 2010.
Classes will be in small group formation, typically with a handful of students and one master teacher. Classes are deliberately kept small so that there will be much attention available from the teacher to each individual. Should any student desire one-on–one classes with the master teacher, then individual private lessons with the master teacher will be arranged at extra cost.
Six classes per day will be available Monday through Friday starting at 10:00-11:00AM, 11:00-noon, lunch break, 1:30-2:30PM, 2:30-3:30PM, 3:30-4:30PM, and 4:30-5:30PM. If enough people want evening classes rather than daytime classes due to work schedules we may be able to create some evening classes. This can be discussed. It is also planned that there will be weekly Kirtan sessions on the weekend that will be open to both students and the general public by donation.
Cost:
Because we have merged our school with Continuing Education of Selkirk College we have simplified options for enrollment in classes. This year we have doubled from two weeks to four weeks of instruction available. Although we heartily recommend committing to study for the full four weeks for maximum learning, it is possible to study in a minimum of one week blocks. In other words, if your schedule will not allow attending classes for four weeks you may purchase a minimum of one week of classes at a cost of $200.00 per week for one class a day Monday through Friday. You may attend one, two, or three weeks of classes if you cannot attend for four full weeks.
Individual group classes will be of one hour duration and will cost $40.00, but please remember you must purchase a minimum of a one week block of lessons. Private one-on-one classes will cost $50.00 per hour. Since more serious students may want to commit to two classes or more a day for five days each week for the duration of school (four week sessions) then a somewhat discounted rate per class will be charged.
